Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth fills

Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth fills : Exercise 1

Before playing this rhythmic figure, you need to understand how it is constructed and what its rudiment reference. Indeed, “Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth” arises from sextuplets. We must not play the second and third sixteenth notes of this sextuplet and you will obtain the expected sound reproduction.

In exercise 1, the objective is to chain “Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth” with a sextuplet. This way, you will stay in the same flow, and this will allow you to rhythmically place this rhythmic figure well. First of all, I advise you to play this second and third sixteenth note on your left and right thighs to maintain the flow of the sextuplet and mark the right space of time between the dotted eighth note and the 3 sixteenth notes that follow. When you feel comfortable with this exercise, move on to the next exercise.

Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth fills : Exercise 2

In this second exercise, you will have to alternate a measure of rhythm in 6/8 and a measure which alternates “Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth” and sextuplets by varying the positions in the measure. By practicing this, you will discover different new breaks to use in many songs.

Dotted eighth note / 3 sixteenth fills : Exercise 3

Exercise 3 offers you variations on toms and snare drums of the fills that you worked on in the previous exercise. You will thus perfect your movements on the drums and obtain new variations for your drum fills.
