In this version, the idea is that you can play this song quickly even if you are a novice in your drumming practice. All the ghost notes have been removed. So, you will have to play a simple pattern. This is variation 4 of the binary rhythms that you can find in the drum lessons (link in prerequisite). Only the bass drum on the “and” of the 2nd beat is not played. The bass drum is played on the 1st beat and the “and” of the 3rd beat.
The verses are played on the hi-hat and the choruses and guitar solo on the ride.
As for the breaks, they are simple and played in a curly manner.
Good practice !

In the original version, there are many ghost notes on the snare drum. In this simplified version, some ghost notes have been removed for ease of execution. First, the ghost note just after the second beat has been removed. Indeed, the most difficult thing is to chain accented notes and weak notes. Second, the two ghost notes in thirty-eighth notes (fallow hand) at the end of the measure have been replaced by a single ghost note in sixteenth notes.
The breaks are played identically to the original version. Indeed, they are not difficult to play and you will need to master the curling technique. The tempo is 96 bpm. With a little practice you will succeed in your breaks without too much difficulty.
Good practice !

The piece Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers is an iconic example of their ability to blend melody, rhythm and emotion into a complex yet accessible composition. Among the elements that contribute to this unique atmosphere, the drum arrangement of Chad Smith stands out for its subtlety and effectiveness. In this article, we will analyze the different facets of this arrangement by exploring its role in the overall structure of the piece, its rhythmic characteristics and its emotional impact.
In this song, the drums do not just provide rhythmic support; they actively participate in establishing the introspective and melancholic atmosphere. Unlike other Red Hot Chili Peppers songs where the drums are more aggressive and prominent, Californication relies on delicate, minimalist playing, highlighting Anthony Kiedis' vocals and John Frusciante's melodic guitar line.
Chad Smith takes a stripped-down approach, leaving space for the other instruments. This restraint is crucial to conveying the emotion of the song, creating a dynamic where each instrumental element breathes and expresses itself without hindrance.
The song's structure is relatively simple, with calm verses, a slightly more energetic chorus, and a gentle progression throughout. The drums fit these sections in a subtle way:
The battery arrangement in Californication is marked by precise technical choices:
The battery in Californication acts as an emotional thread. His measured and steady playing reflects the melancholy of the song, supporting the themes of disillusionment and search for identity explored in the lyrics.
By not trying to dominate the composition, Chad Smith amplifies the vulnerability and sincerity that shines through in the melody and vocals. This choice of arrangement demonstrates a musical maturity where the drums serve above all the song as a whole.
In the original version, there are quite a few ghost notes on the snare drum. The hardest part is to chain the accented snare drums and the ghost note one. First, I advise you to work on the simplified version which contains fewer ghost notes but keeps the essentials of the original pattern. This will allow you to work on the dynamics of your ghost notes more easily. It is absolutely essential to respect the ghost notes because otherwise the sound of the pattern will not be in line with the atmosphere of the piece.
It involves playing a hi-hat and an eighth-note ride throughout the song. Rhythmically, it's not that complicated, but the way Chad Smith plays the hi-hat is much more complicated. In fact, he plays with an open 1/3 hi-hat, allowing him to integrate precise and sharp opening effects. This contributes enormously to the quality of the groove in this song.
The bass drum playing is simple and does not present any major difficulty.
Conclusion
In Californication, Chad Smith's drum arrangement exemplifies a "less is more" approach, where each drum stroke is carefully thought out to complement the rest of the composition. This track proves that drums can play a key role in conveying emotion while remaining unobtrusive. Chad Smith's execution highlights the importance of musicality and listening in a band, making the drums not only a rhythmic support but also a vital contributor to the overall atmosphere of the track.
