In basic theory there are 4 quarter notes in a single measure. This means that each time you have to play a stroke with your fingers. Either you play with the same fingers, or you alternate between your middle and index fingers. This will depend both on the speed of what you play but also on your feelings. You can use your index or middle finger, it's up to you. On the other hand, if the tempo is fast, I advise you to alternate between the two fingers to avoid tensing up. Also note that other techniques exist on the bass allowing you to work on quarter notes!
Another technique for playing the quarter note on the bass is to play with the thumb. In this case you will be able to choose as for the index and middle fingers. Either you alternate with the thumb or you only play downwards. Moreover, we can note that the thumb brings a form of softness and roundness to the sound. Secondly, you can always use the pick and play down strokes. Be careful, this will of course depend on the speed of execution. If it's too fast, don't hesitate to alternate. Ultimately, the pick down allows you to attack the strings very strongly. This gives a Rock appearance! Always try to keep your notes on time as much as possible. Indeed, whatever technique you choose works regularly. This way you will improve your tempo and your cohesion with the drums. In a group you need a tempo guarantor. Ideally everyone should be. Unfortunately, if your drummer moves, be sure to be his metronome!
